Internet use in business during the 1990s marked a significant shift in how companies operated, sold goods, and interacted with customers. Early websites were often static and simple, but over the years, businesses and developers began experimenting with more interactive and dynamic content. This shift presented new challenges for developers needing to manage and orchestrate their applications and platforms.

In 2014, Google developed Kubernetes to address those needs. Since then, it has become the de-facto standard for container orchestration platforms, automating containerized applications' deployment, scaling, and management. Its large and active community of contributors continues to drive its development.

Managing Kubernetes can be challenging, especially when deploying and managing stateful applications that require persistent storage. Enter Helm, a powerful open-source tool that simplifies package management and application deployment for Kubernetes applications. 

What is Helm?

Helm became a CNCF graduated project in 2020. It helps bring together various Kubernetes yaml files for configuring networking, storage, and other application components from different files across different teams into a solid directory structure, or Helm chart. It provides a consistent way to deploy an application and has been adopted by about 70% of Kubernetes users.

As a package manager designed specifically for Kubernetes, Helm: 

  • Provides an easy way to find, share, and use software built for Kubernetes. 
  • Makes it easy to define, install, and upgrade applications across different environments.
  • Enables users to easily share and reuse configurations, reducing the time required to deploy applications.

With Helm, pre-built application templates can be customized to meet specific requirements and include all the necessary resources, making it possible to deploy complex applications with just a few simple commands. Helm provides Kubernetes manifests, config maps, and an easy-to-use UI that allow users to manage their Helm releases and monitor their applications.

The Helm Journey

In 2015 a startup project called Deis developed Helm as a declarative manner to deploy their applications, and at that time, it was considered a competitor to Kubernetes. But in 2016, it was clear to the startup that they should combine their efforts with Google. As part of the collaboration, Google contributed its GCS Deployment Manager, and Helm became a Kubernetes sub-project.

In 2019, Helm, version 3, simplified the Helm experience by removing the Tiller server component and improving the Chart format and capabilities. Charts can leverage various libraries for reuse and templating and more importantly, you can serve, publish, and distribute a Helm chart through any web server. Overall, Helm 3 represented a significant step forward toward simplified Helm adoption.


The Challenges of Using Helm

Like anything in our realm, there are challenges to using Helm. 

1. Time consuming to learn Helm because a Chart may have many YAML files

Helm is often the first step toward application automation for both operators and developers. Bringing all of the different concerns across different teams at an organization – for example security credentials – across storage, networking, and application files into different parts of a Helm chart makes managing them easier, but the Chart can become cumbersome and difficult to navigate. 

2. Each configuration property, in each file, may represent a separate domain concern

All of the different concerns for configuration and operations across different departments and teams must be added to the Helm chart and translated into YAML. As the configuration scope moves from uncoordinated single use values by each team to variables reused across the entire Chart, using Helm well can be a steep learning curve. This software development method is new for those accustomed to managing and administering variables and operations manually through a graphical user interface (GUI).

3. As Charts mature, customization requires the population of values to explode

As Helm Charts mature, more customization is needed to appropriately deploy to multiple environments such as small, medium, and large data clusters. Production sequences can differ from sequences in development, leading to an explosion of values and management requirements. 

4. Documentation may be lacking

Documentation is often lacking for mature and exhaustive charts, increasing the risk of misconfigurations – and deployments often fail because of just one misconfigured variable. This has become a widespread challenge for users adopting Helm for the first time.
